Volleyball Success at Painsley
By on 23 February 2010
It has been a successful few months for Painsley Volleyball Club. Mrs Roberts, Mathematics teacher has qualified as a Level 1 UKCC Volleyball coach after spending three days of October half term week training at Fenton Manor Sports Centre. She said “I have been able to assist Ant Viggars, our Level 3 Volleyball coach, every Wednesday after school and have been delighted at the progress made by many of our students.”
The school club link with Newcastle (Staffs) Volleyball Club has gone from strength to strength. Six Painsley students now train regularly with the club making the 30 mile round trip once or twice a week to access top quality coaching. This has been rewarded by all those players participating in the West Midlands championships over the last month. Molly Boughey became the first Painsley girl to play Volleyball at a National level as part of Newcastle’s Under 16 Girls’ Team who have made it through to the quarter finals of the National Cup. The team beat opposition from York, Wolverhampton and Durham to make it to the “top 8s” on 27 February at Kettering Conference Centre.
The boys have been equally successful. For Nicholas Litchfield, Harry Degg and Lewis Wattley last weekend was their first taste of competitive indoor Volleyball, competing in the Under 15 Midlands Championships. Bartosz Wozniak, playing for the Newcastle ‘A’ team, was a member of the winning team and will be competing at Birmingham on 21 March for the National title. Meanwhile Daniel Kaminski and Bartosz played in the Under 16 Regional qualifiers for the ‘B’ team (where Mrs Roberts was the Assistant coach!) in a day won by the Newcastle ‘A’ team. They now face a tough training schedule to be part of the ‘A’ team squad that are hot favourites for the National Title.
The Painsley under 15 volleyball players have also made it through the Moorlands qualifiers for the Staffordshire Schools 4 a side title and will be competing in March against tough opposition from Madeley High School in the finals. Mr Bullock, Head of PE, has been delighted with the progress of many players who have been able to access top GCSE marks in their PE practical scores. We congratulate the students on these wonderful achievements.
