KS5 - Applied Science

Unit 1

This is an externally assess unit (1 ½ hr exam).

Involving short answered questions, structures and free response questions drawn from the contents section. As part of this you will be given a pre release article several weeks before you sit the exam. In this unit you will learn about how science is used to monitor health. You will learn about different monitoring and diagnostic methods and the regulations surrounding them. You will also look at the ethical issues surrounding these areas.

Unit 2

This is an internally assessed unit.

In this unit you will learn about some of the skills needed to analyse and identify Chemical and Biological substances.(Being an Analytical Scientist). An important part of their job is their accuracy in following correct techniques and procedures and to be accurate when they record and interpret their findings. You will work as part of a team to produce practical work, this will form part of your portfolio as well as looking at two teams working in an industrial context.

Unit 3

Internally assessed unit. In this unit you will learn about how energy stored in carbon based fuels can be used to produce energy. You will follow and analyse the energy pathway from its formation to its combustion. You will look at the efficiency an impact of domestic hot water systems. You will also study two organisations involved with energy production and usage on the local, national and international scale.

    'Bite Me' Evening at Painsley

On 10th June, Dr Mike Leahy from National Geographic’s ‘Bite me!’ series and BBC ‘Horizon’, came to Painsley Catholic College. He gave highly amusing and engaging talks to students from Year 7 to Year 12 biology and media studies’ students about his life as a virologist and natural history presenter. Dr Leahy specialises in tropical diseases and parasites. Students gained a real insight into this fascinating field of biomedical science. In the evening, families attended a PTA event: ‘An audience with Dr Leahy….’. Again, he wowed audiences with his highly entertaining talk about the world of parasites and his role as a practical parasitologist. This means he actually infects himself with worms and disease to monitor the effects of these diseases!!! The serious message was that these diseases form part of the cycle of poverty and that his aim is to raise awareness of this. Student STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) Ambassadors supported the evening and raffled prizes such as a signed book by Professor Brian Cox, from his BBC series ‘The Universe’. The funds raised help to support Painsley’s twin Catholic school in Ghana. Students will visit Ghana in 2012 as part of their World Challenge expedition.

The event forms part of the college’s science specialism programme of events, fully supported by the proactive PTA at the college.
