KS4 - Years 9, 10 and 11

Drama is taught as an option at GCSE level in Years 9, 10 and 11, following the Edexcel specification. Students begin in Year 9 with a wide ranging introduction to all elements of the course, practical, technical and theoretical. They are given as many opportunities as possible to perform in public including bespoke devised performances that support the school’s pastoral days. In the spring term Year 9 have a theatre trip and write their first theatre review following this visit.

In Year 10 students are encouraged to become more independent in their working methods, such as finding their own stimulus material when devising drama. They perform scripted pieces as part of the Christmas concert. Year 10 begin formal assessment in the Spring term, with a theatre trip followed by a written theatre review which forms part of the marks for Unit 2. In the summer term they complete Unit 2 by undertaking two days of practical workshops based on a script, and write a portfolio analysing their practical work.

In Year 11 students complete Unit 1 in the Autumn term. They undertake two days of practical devising workshops and write a portfolio analysing their practical work. In the Summer term Year 11 students perform their final practical piece of work, worth 40%. They opt to either perform a scripted or devised piece, or may offer a technical option including lighting, sound, set and props, mask and makeup or costume. This final performance is shown as part of the GCSE Drama showcase in May.
