The subject is complimented by an excellent extra-curricular programme. Weekly rehearsals begin in September for the annual school production in February, which is produced in partnership with Music department. Recent past productions include Guys and Dolls and Oh, What A Lovely War! This production is open to all students from Years 7-11, and many students also assist backstage with lighting, sound, prop and costume design.
Following the school production, weekly rehearsals begin for the Drama club annual production in July, a club that is run by GCSE Drama students. Again, this production is open to all members of the school. Past summer productions include Romeo and Juliet, and the production planned for 2011 is A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
There is an annual GCSE Drama showcase in May which features performance and technical work from Years 9, 10 and 11 who have opted for the subject at GCSE. This event is a good opportunity for all GCSE Drama students to see each others’ work and learn from each other, as well as offering each other support. It serves as the final formal examination for Year 11 students, and as a mock examination for Years 9 and 10.
The Performing Arts Studio for Drama is well furnished with specialist theatre lighting and sound equipment. Exam results are excellent and well above the national average.. The curriculum is enhanced by regular trips to the theatre, participation in local theatre events, and practical workshops run by visiting theatre practitioners which benefit both staff and students.
