KS5 - Years 12 and 13

At AS/A2 level we follow the OCR A level specification. This seeks to look in more detail, with a greater emphasis on detailed case studies, at a mixture of physical and human geography processes and patterns.

At AS level, the course has a distinct ‘Human’ and ‘Physical’ split between the topics.

The January module is taken on ‘Human’ geography, including topics such as ‘Tourism’, ‘Energy’ and ‘Urban Geography’.

In June of Year12 the ‘Physical’ paper is taken, looking at ‘Rivers’, ‘Cold Environments’ and ‘Coasts’

To support this work we have a three day residential to North Wales and the Peak District, where we also collect data to be used later on in the A2 course in Year 13.

At A2 level, the course again is spilt 50/50 between ‘Geographical Skills’ (January module) and ‘Global Issues’ (June module).

The ‘Skills’ module is an assessment of an A level geography students ability to plan and undertake a geographical investigation. It does not require any coursework to be submitted; rather it is an examination of a student’s ability to apply geographical reasoning to different scenarios.

‘Global Issues’ focuses on some of the complex geographical issues facing society. It looks at ‘Climatic Hazards’, ‘Ecosystems and Environments’  and ‘Globalisation’, seeking to understand how geography links places and processes together in a complex pattern of flows and stores.
