At Key stage five, students can choose A Level Philosophy and Ethics and follow the Edexcel specification on Ethics and Philosophy of Religion.
Students at AS level complete two exams, one as an in-depth study of a medical ethics issue.
At A2 level students complete 2 exams, one as an anthology unit. Topics covered include:
- Ethical theories of Utilitarianism, Situation Ethics, Natural Moral Law and Categorical Imperative.
- Debates surrounding the use of Ethical language.
- Applied Ethics, including issues of war and peace.
- Arguments for the existence of God, including the Teleological and Design Arguments as well as Religious Experience.
- A study of Theodicy
- The use of religious language
- Debates surrounding the nature of miracles, life after death and conscience.
All sixth form students complete the Asdan CoPE Level 3 award through their weekly Beliefs and Values lesson and their pastoral time. This course is a skills based portfolio course where, in Beliefs and Values, we study issues such as Active Citizenship, Global Awareness and Human Rights. The qualification awards 70 UCAS points on a Pass/Fail basis.
