The National Curriculum order sets out three types of activity through which the pupils should develop their D&T capability. These are:
- Designing and Making Assignments (DMA) in which pupils put their capability to work to develop a product that meets real needs.
- Focused Practical Tasks (FPT) in which the pupils develop and practice particular skills and knowledge.
- Products and Applications Tasks in which pupils analyse, investigate and disassemble existing products. Using what they find out to add to their repertoire of skills, knowledge and understanding.
The department uses all these activities in its teaching and learning. At times integrating one activity with another as part of a larger task. Pupils will experience both practical and theoretical work in lesson time. The department aims to reinforce subject knowledge through pupils’ practical experience, helping them to realise its influence on the world around us.
