In a recent review the LEA District Senior Advisor wrote “The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Department of Painsley Catholic College is of outstanding quality”
Painsley has a full time Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) Mrs Griffiths, a part time Special Needs Tutor and 8 Teaching Assistants, 4 full time and 4 part time.
We are one of the first schools to have 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA). All the staff in the department are well trained, dedicated and conscientious.
Pupils are taught in smaller class groups of approximately 14 pupils. Some pupils are taught in even smaller, withdrawal groups, up to a maximum of four with each student having an individual programme to meet their needs.
The accommodation in the department includes a Special Needs classroom, a Learning Support tutorial room and an office.
The department is well resourced with up to date materials and dedicated computer software.
Special Needs caters for a diverse number of needs including dyslexia, dispraxia, behaviour and emotional difficulties, physical disabilities, hearing and visual impairment.
The Teaching Assistant roles include working with small groups of pupils and classroom help across the curriculum.
Pupils’ progress is regularly assessed and carefully monitored.
Throughout all key stages pupils are taught a differentiated curriculum according to their individual needs and ability.
In 2011 all targets were exceded with 100% of students attaining 5A*-C.
All transitional reviews from Yr6 to Yr 7 are attended by the SENCO.
Transitional reviews from KS3 to KS4 are attended by a Connexions Representative. Finally SENCO meets with Head of Year11 and the Director of The Moorlands’ Sixth Form before moving into Yr12.
Where appropriate outside agencies are invited to attend and contribute to transitional reviews.
