On Wednesday (14 December), a team of eight volunteers swapped the banking-hall for the classroom to deliver its award winning Fit4Finance programme to the school's fifteen and sixteen year olds. Interactive sessions and financially-themed board-games engaged more than 170 students on the day, using real-life examples to simplify the financial issues that young people face.        Jenny Kinson, education manager at CFS, said: "We are delighted to have helped the students at Painsley Catholic College develop a greater understanding of financial matters. Salvation Army Presents Appeal

Written by Painsley Admin Staff on Thursday, 15 December 2011 15:22
As part of their Citizenship and PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) programme this year, Year 7 students at Painsley Catholic College have been taking part in the Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal. This appeal aims to collect presents to be distributed to children in the Stoke-on-Trent area who otherwise would not be receiving gifts this Christmas. Students, either individually or with a friend, chose a gift tag which gave the age of the child for whom the gift was for and then bought a present for that person. From the moment the letters and gift tags were sent home the response was fantastic. Gifts came into school everyday. Amongst the offerings were a guitar, footballs, teddy bears and colouring books. Soon it wasn’t just Year 7 who were contributing; Mrs Brown and her Year 11 students were so touched by the appeal that they had a collection and bought a selection of toys to donate.   On Tuesday 13th December, Neil Denyer from the Salvation Army came to collect the gifts and met some of the Year 7 students who had worked so hard on this appeal. He was impressed with the response and said that it would make a lot of children very happy.

Behjat Omer Abdulla, an artist and asylum seeker from Iraq worked with Year 9 students, who have chosen art as an option, at Painsley recently. They spent 2 days drawing portraits of themselves and others in the group, investigating the theme of identity. They were each given a number and experienced what it must have been like to be considered, not as a person with his or her own identity and personality, but purely as a statistic. The students thoroughly enjoyed the 2 days and made exceptional progress with drawing using graphite powder, producing amazing results.

Languages Day at Painsley

Written by Painsley Admin Staff on Tuesday, 22 November 2011 09:26
On Thursday 17th November Year 4 pupils from their feeder primary schools visited Painsley Catholic College’s Modern Foreign Languages department to participate in the 5th annual “Celebration of Languages Day.” This year the language chosen was German. The idea of the day is to give Year 4 pupils the chance to immerse themselves for a morning/afternoon in a Modern Foreign Language using fun leaning activities. Each pupil had the opportunity to learn a song about being a foreigner, which all pupils then sang together in the hall at the end of the session. Another activity was to learn to introduce themselves to a pupil from another school in German and some pupils were even brave enough to demonstrate this in the hall in front of all of the others. Finally all pupils enjoyed watching a short video based on the well-known book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” (“die Kleine Raupe Nimmersatt” in German) and they then used the new vocabulary they had learnt to play a game. The Year 4 pupils were supported in their learning by 20 Year 8 students from Painsley who were chosen by the MFL Department due to their commitment to and enthusiasm for Modern Languages, some of them being in the MFL Gifted and Talented group. All Year 4 pupils seemed to enjoy their time at Painsley and were very enthusiastic in their first attempts at learning German.

Year 9 students from Painsley Catholic College, in conjunction with students from our Sixth Form at the Moorlands Sixth Form Centre and pupils from the primary feeder schools, have donated over 200 boxes filled with toys, jewellery, sports equipment and sweets to the Operation Christmas Child campaign. The scheme is run by the Samaritan’s Purse, to allow underprivileged children to enjoy the Christmas festivities this year. The appeal will send the decorated shoeboxes to children all over the world. Miss Siobhan Timms, who co-ordinated the project at Painsley and the other schools, is thrilled by the response from the students and looks forward to repeating this successful project next year.
